Project statement / English
This project uses staged photography to reconstruct seemingly ordinary yet regulated spaces—canteens, dormitories, and surveillance rooms—to explore how systems of control shape identity and the experience of being watched. Inspired by my reflection on the Chinese art examination system, which once served as a source of validation, but has since become a source of self-doubt, this work examines how societal “norms” can define us.
Drawing from Foucault's Panopticon, I realized that surveillance is not only an external force, but also an internalized power embedded within us. Through recurring symbols, such as obsolete televisions, security cameras, and untouched utensils, my work simulates an invisible system of discipline. Nostalgia, once comforting, is revealed to be an aesthetic tool used to maintain order.
This project is not merely a personal account; it invites viewers to reflect on their own participation in these mechanisms of control: Who is watching you, and are you watching yourself?
